Exercise is the answer when you’re looking to get washboard abs, a toned behind, or lean arms — but what about when you want to live to 100 years old?

One centenarian credits his long life to his workout routine, insisting that it has not only kept his body fit over the years but also his mind!

The World War Hero That Refuses to Quit

John Hamilton is a World War II veteran who just turned 105 and has no plans to slow down.

His life spans so many world-changing events, including the famous battle of Dunkirk in 1939, where he fought as a young soldier. Hamilton remained a military man his whole life, serving in the Middle East and working as a tank instructor until his retirement.

Even though many men lost their lives at Dunkirk, Hamilton was evacuated and survived. Though more than 80 years have passed since the battle, Hamilton still remembers it will stunning clarity.

“I had a sort of aggressive feeling about it. This is what I have been trained to do. To shoot. I am an anti-aircraft gunner, I’ve got to shoot down airplanes. And I’ll do my best to do it.”

He went on to his wife Elsa a short time later when the two sheltered under a tree during a storm in England. Their love story lasted 67 years until her death.

Afterward, Hamilton’s life was turned upside down, but he managed to carry on by keeping up a vigorous exercise routine.

Not many people live to be 100 years old, so John doesn’t have very many peers left in his life.

Most of his old friends have passed away, but his family, which keeps growing, is always by his side. The father of three has eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His family’s frequent visits and company contribute to his longevity.

“My oldest friend was Art who died aged 97. We met 80 years ago playing rugby before going our separate ways during the war. I miss him daily. My big family helps to keep me going.”

Of course, wine doesn’t hurt!

While John admits that his family’s love is a major factor in his health, he also admits that he has a glass of wine every other night. Why live so long if you can’t enjoy life’s small delights?

He definitely enjoyed a few vices throughout his long life, including smoking a pipe, but Hamilton would credit fitness for his longevity if he had to choose a single factor.

“The key to a long life is exercising – it makes you physically well but is mentally stimulating too. If I didn’t go (exercising) I think my last days would be long gone by now.”

When he was in his late nineties, he broke a world record in 1000m rowing for the 94-99-year-old age group.

Even now that he lives in care and struggles with his balance, Hamilton continues to walk a mile every day and is sure that he won’t slow down anytime soon.
